The Story of Estrogen

In this blog, I'm going to take you on a journey down memory lane as it pertains to the story of estrogen and what estrogen represents for the positive health of a woman. I'm also going to review the historic precedent in the scientific literature for the existence of numerous estrogen deficiency diseases, symptoms, and syndromes. Finally, I'll talk about my clinical experience treating estrogen deficiency with True Physiologic Rejuvenation Protocols, which were created specifically to treat the endocrinopathy that every woman will experience at some point during her reproductive life, ovarian failure or estrogen deficiency.

Everyone would agree that opinions differ a great deal on the subject of estrogen. The medical field has been biased against it for a long time, and there are no plans to change that. In fact, there's a lot of momentum in place to tarnish estrogen's good reputation. Just a few years ago, estradiol was placed on the official list of carcinogens. Yet within the medical profession, there are differences of opinion and different schools of thought.

For example:

To many, estrogen is a major hazard to women's health, something to be avoided at all costs and then given at the lowest dose for the shortest duration of time.

To others, estrogen is the saving grace of women at every stage of their lives, from menarche to the grave, and if women are maintained in an estrogen rich environment, their health and quality of life parameters are greatly enhanced.

Then there are large segments of society that call into question anything and everything the medical profession has to say about women's health. I can understand their skepticism and distrust, since estrogen deficient women represent a target rich environment for exploitation by the pharmaceutical industry. Women are wary of being sedated, tranquilized, or otherwise drugged to palliate the symptoms of their estrogen deficiency.

I have some experience with this because I wrote a book called Estrogen: A Girl’s Best Friend. However, I could never get it published. I tried for a whole year to get it published, and the responses that I got back from submitting my manuscript were that it was a compelling work, but sexist. I learned that there are certain topics that male physicians can't discuss. Somewhere, amongst all this confusion and difference of opinion, there is myth, there is truth, and there is fact.

I'm going to weave into the tapestry of this blog the personal accounts of patients, utilizing their words to tell the story of estrogen. But more specifically, their experience with rhythmic estrogen restoration, also referred to as "true” Physiologic Rejuvenation (Periodic Protocol). The Periodic Protocol is the best GPS for a doctor and a hormone coach to use when helping a patient reach true estrogen balance. Training and mentorship programs are discussed on the website.

So in order to find the truth about estrogen, I've had to lean heavily upon the wisdom and experience of men and women from the past. Giants in medicine and giants in obstetrics and gynecology—individuals who strove to find that delicate dosage balance that made for well-being.

They devised dosing protocols and titrated those dosing protocols to specific criteria. Even Dr. Ephrahem Shorr, who co-authored numerous research papers with Dr. George Pappanicolaou (father of the PAP smear), was forced to admit in a 1940 paper that one size does not fit all. He found in his estrogen research that dosing requirements could vary by as much as 1000% between patients.

There are organizations that have become very effective at disseminating misinformation about estrogen and tarnishing estrogen's good reputation.

Periodic Sciences is a group that fights for women's health and their right to the best medical care. To deprive women of estrogen for no solid medical reason is a crime against humanity.
